Meet Cloud Girls Rising Star Award Winner: Dora Cheng

Mar 26, 2025

Dora is an up-and-coming leader in the cloud security and compliance space, beginning her career in audit and compliance services and now translating that technology expertise as a principal product manager in Microsoft. She is an ambitious leader experienced in solving complex problems through technologies. Her current technology work centers around the fraud and abuse prevention, detection, and response of Microsoft, one of the largest cloud service providers in the world, along with billions of consumer and enterprise accounts. As a leader of an organization wide project at Microsoft, her collaboration with other experts has led to the deployment of innovative detection and protection machine learning algorithms. She is very active in hackathons and opportunities to leverage her passion and expertise in cloud to solve real word issues, such as developing a cloud based service to help stop human trafficking and support vulnerable populations and engaging in community events with foster youth to teach them about career options in the cloud and the power of cloud technology.

What one example shows how Dora has innovated in the cloud and next-gen tech space and shunned the status quo?

An innovative example that we would like to highlight is Dora’s work in driving collaboration across and outside of Microsoft to use cloud technology to support law enforcement and non-profit to eradicate child sex trafficking. Dora has taken the skills and resources she has access to and expanded their use into good for our greater society. This involves not only the use of her technical expertise but also demonstrates her leadership ability to engage with and inspire others to join in and contribute to initiatives providing significant impact to others.

Are there any outstanding achievements or compelling examples of Dora’s exemplary leadership that highlight her ability to inspire team members around cloud and next-gen technologies?

In addition to Dora’s leadership extending beyond her “day job” to greater causes like addressing human trafficking, she is also responsible for leading an organization wide effort at Microsoft addressing fraud and abuse scenarios for cloud-based systems. This effort involves over 100 participants and includes executive leaders at several levels. With her passion around the mission of this effort, she’s created momentum, engagement, and impact. Her ability to connect the work being done to the real world and relatable implications has led to partnerships and collaboration allowing the organization to move further and faster together.

What is your favorite quote?

“Don’t aspire to make a living, aspire to make a difference.” – Denzel Washington

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

I would be a Golden Retriever. They are loyal, energetic, and always ready to lend a helping paw. I’d be that dog who’s always there to cheer people up. Whether it’s wagging my tail to spread joy or being the listening ear when someone needs it, I’d be the type of companion who’s there through thick and thin, bringing positivity and good vibes. Plus, Golden Retrievers are known for their intelligence and willingness to learn, so I’d be the dog that’s not just loyal but also sharp and quick to adapt.

Who do you admire most and why?

I deeply admire my godmother. She is full of love, patience, and encouragement. She stepped into the role of a mother in my life, asking for nothing in return. She continually reminds me that I am capable of achieving anything I set my mind to. Her example inspires me to live with a purpose that extends beyond myself.
